CORPORATE IT UPDATE-(C)1995-2011 M2 COMMUNICATIONS
18 March 2011 -- Internet publisher Yahoo (NASDAQ:YHOO) has offered the UK users of its websites to select the "Ad Choices" icon to check how their information is used by online advertisers, the Financial Times reports.
By clicking on the "Ad Choices" icon, users will not only see who published the advertisement and why but can also set their preferences for targeted advertising. Yahoo hopes that such a scheme would help the public understand more broadly its advertising targeting policy.
The introduction of the scheme in the UK comes a year after the scheme was adopted in the US. The UK launch precedes the implementation of the European Union's Privacy and Electronic Communications Directive in the country on 25 May 2011. The directive would impose a set of tough rules on websites such as requesting visitors' permission before installing any information collection software, such as cookies, on their computers.
