SEN. ROCKEFELLER SAYS THOUSANDS OF NEW JOBS AT MACY'S GROUNDBREAKING WILL CREATE NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR EASTERN PANHANDLE

MARTINSBURG, W.

Va., April 15 -- The office of Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV, D-W.

Va., issued the following news release:

Senator Jay Rockefeller today attended a groundbreaking celebrating the 1,900 full-time and seasonal jobs that will be created by the new Macy's Fulfillment Center in Martinsburg. In addition, thousands of other jobs will be created during the construction of the facility. Rockefeller joined other government officials and Macy's representatives at the groundbreaking for the new center, which will occupy 1.3 million square feet in a brand new building and will employ 1,200 full time workers and 700 additional seasonal employees during the holiday shopping season.

"Macy's made a great decision in building a new center in the Eastern Panhandle. There are great workers and great families in this area and I know this will be a very productive and efficient distribution center.

"This is one of the largest jobs announcements in the area in years, creating thousands of good-paying, reliable jobs. It's the result of a great deal of work from a lot of different individuals, and will boost the local economy for West Virginians in and around Martinsburg. I thank Macy's for choosing our state out of more than 100 locations, and I'm confident the company will thrive with the help of our unmatched West Virginia workforce. West Virginia workers are without a doubt the best in the world."

BACKGROUND:

Officials from Macy's announced this past December that Berkeley County had been chosen as the site for the company's newest fulfillment center. The new center, which is expected to cost $150,000 million, is expected to be operational by spring 2012. Macy's has seen their Internet sales grow rapidly over the last few years, as the company allows customers to shop seamlessly in stores, online, and via mobile devices. The Berkeley County facility represents a significant expansion of Macy's online capacity and is a part of the rapidly expanding high-speed Internet economy.

Rockefeller is dedicated to making sure that West Virginia has a prominent place in the Internet economy. As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, Rockefeller has continually pushed to improve high-speed Internet access in rural and underserved areas, including working to develop $4.7 billion Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) in the Recovery Act, resulting in nearly $180 million in federal funding for high-speed Internet service to West Virginia.
