An estimated 1,000 people attended a lavish $100-a-head cocktail reception Tuesday night for Mayor Thomas M. Whalen III at the Albany Hilton, an event expected to generate at least $80,000 for the mayor's re-election campaign.
The fund-raiser was picketed for more than an hour by approximately 120 city firefighters and police officers, who have been without a contract since Dec. 31. The unions were joined by Alderman Gerald Jennings, a frequent critic of the mayor.
